Long Term Vs. Short Term

The difference between long term and short term stocks is fairly self explanatory, but it’s important to fully understand both types of investments before investing yourself. A long term investment is an investment that the investor intends to rise over a long period of time. A short term investment is just the opposite. Anyone who intends an investment to be short term hopes that the value of the stock will rise over a short period of time. Both types of investments are great and it’s important to understand the differences of both before investing in any company.

Fluxx (Card Game)

Players: 2-6

Playtime: 5-30 minutesFluxx2.jpg

Fluxxis the card game with ever changing rules. It may sound complicated, but it’s actually extremely easy to learn. The objective of the game is to be the player with the two “keeper” cards (each keeper card displays a different object) that match the two keepers on the “goal” card currently in play. But after that, it gets really wild. Players can change the goal, add or eliminate rules, steal cards from other players, and so much more! The game is great for families or friends and offers enjoyment for all ages. Fluxx comes in over 6 versions other than the original, such as pirate Fluxx, zombie Fluxx, and monster Fluxx, and can be bought in several languages. I would recommend this game for any family game night, sleepover, or party in the world.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Year: 2015

Rating: PG-13

Director: J.J. Abrams

Running Time: 2h 16m

Genre: Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure

Star Wars: The Force Awakensis the 7th movie in the Star Wars series and takes place 30 years after Darth Vader was defeated in episode VI. The story follows Rey, a scavenger from the planet Jakku, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper who chose to follow the path of good rather than evil, as well as several characters that appeared in past movies in the series. Rey and Finn have one mission, to locate Luke Skywalker with the help of a map, found in the droid BB-8, but a new threat lurks nearby that intends to stop Rey and Finn. The movie scored a 4.5 out of 5 in my opinion because it utilized a good mix of adventure, action, and science fiction, to create an incredible film. This movie would be great for any family to watch on a weekend, or any day of the week. One thing that I would suggest for everyone who hasn’t seen the other movies in the series is to watch them before seeing the new movie so that they can fully understand all the events in the newest movie. I would definitely recommend that everyone watches Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If they remember watching the other movies as a kid, or are just starting to watch the series now, they would greatly appreciate the newest movie.

Foundations of a Great Company – Mattel

Company Name: Mattel

Ticker Symbol: MAT

Founder(s): Harold Matson, Elliot Handler, Ruth Handler

CEO: Christopher Sinclair

Mattel.png

In 1945 Harold Matson and Elliot Handler started Mattel, a company that sold picture frames. Matson later sold his part in the company to Elliot Handler and Ruth, Elliot’s wife, took over Matson’s role. The company went on to sell dollhouse furniture and is now one of the biggest toy companies in the world. You may know them for their popular Barbie dolls or Hot Wheels cars. Last year alone they made $6 billion. The company even made it’s way into the S&P 500. The current CEO once worked as the CEO of Pepsi Co meaning he has plenty of experience. The company has about 31 000 employees and is still growing. Mattel has $1.8 billion in debt, but as of this post being published, the company is worth over $11 billion. With the money they made last year they could have payed off their debt 3 times and still have had some money left over. I actually thought this was such a strong company that I invested in it several weeks ago and it has gone up since then. I would definitely invest in this company if I were you, but don’t just take my advice. Even some of the worlds best stock traders are wrong about certain companies. You should always do your research before investing in any company.

Wacom Intuos Art Creative Pen & Touch Tablet

Intuos.png

The Wacom Intuos Art Pen and Touch digital graphics, drawing & painting tabletis a drawing pad that’s compatible with most computers. It comes with a tablet and a stylus, and allows the user to easily draw digital artwork. The tablet can be used like a computer mouse and comes with an art program upon purchase. It’s very expensive though, and I would only recommend this for anyone who is serious about art and electronics. I had a ton of fun using it and definitely will use it often.

Scout & the Gumboot Kids

scoutandthegumbootkids_poster_1

Scout the mouse sends the Gumboot kids through a series of scavenger hunts to identify clues in nature. The children become mindful of their environment as they search for the clues.  The show encourages children to get outside!! And to explore nature, to be mindful of their environment, and to slow down and notice the sights, sounds and textures in nature.  Each episode introduces a mindful pause with a guided mindful exercise, whether it is to observe, listen, taste, feel, and touch or to be mindful of their friends; the children learn to take a moment to truly become aware of their surroundings.

Created by Eric Hogan and Tara Hungerford, Scout & the Gumboot Kids is a refreshing change in children’s programming. Each episode is a short 5 minutes of lovely mindfulness.

The Art of Breathing

The Art of Breathing.png

The average person takes about 15 breaths a minute. Breathing is something we do with little thought. However, when we are feeling angry, anxious or frightened our breathing quickens and oxygen moves from our brains and is sent to our limbs in a Fight, Flee or Freeze response.  The part of our brain responsible for this is called the amygdala and its primary purpose is to keep us safe, but it can sometimes think we are in danger when we really aren’t.  When we are in a Fight, Flee or Freeze response and less oxygen is reaching our brains, we often fail to think clearly.  This is when we have to get more oxygen back to our brains and we can do this by paying attention to our breathing.

I remember being told to breathe when I became anxious prior to exams; but breathing in and out often left me feeling more anxious and often in a state of panic. The advice to breathe slowly was sound but what I failed to know was that there was an art to slowing my breath.

Square breathing was introduced to me by an elementary school teacher and it has become so beneficial to not only me but also my children when trying to calm ourselves. The best part of square breathing is that it is really very simple to perform.

With your finger, trace a square in the air. Each line of the square should take four slow counts.

  • Now breathe in for the first line of the square, as you are breathing slowly count …1,2,3,4
  • Hold your breath for four counts as you trace the second line … 1,2,3,4
  • Exhale for four counts while still tracing the square … 1,2,3,4
  • And hold for four counts as you trace the last line … 1,2,3,4

Continue inhaling, holding, exhaling and holding for 2 minutes. Check in with yourself, how are you feeling? Like anything new, learning ‘calming breath’ takes practice.  Be patient with the process and with yourself. Practice throughout your day and as you improve you will likely be able to increase the hold count for a longer stretch.

Thank you, Lori

Rating: R

Director: Lenny Abrahamson

Running Time: 1hr 58 mins

Genre: Drama

Roomis a powerful story featuring a woman and her five year old son who experience the world after being held captive for years. The story begins in the one room that the two lived in for 7 years and continues until after they escape to the outside world. This movie was absolutely amazing. The story had me on the edge of my seat, the acting was incredible, and the story line was phenomenal. I would recommend this movie to anyone who gets the chance to watch it. It’s no surprise to me that this movie won an academy award.
